A little preparation can make your child’s first daycare day easier for everyone. Pack familiar, practical items that help staff care for your child and keep their day moving smoothly. Before you shop or fill a bag, ask the daycare about its policies for food, diapers, sleep items, and toys. Requirements vary, and a quick check can prevent last-minute surprises. Use this checklist as a starting point, then adjust it to your child’s age and the center’s routine.
Pack Extra Clothes
Include at least one complete change of clothes: a shirt, pants or leggings, underwear if needed, and socks. For infants and toddlers who are learning to eat or use the toilet, consider packing two changes. Choose clothes your child can move in and that staff can manage easily, such as elastic-waist pants and simple layers.
Add a weather-appropriate outer layer if your child may play outside. Place the clothes in a resealable bag or labeled pouch inside the backpack. If the daycare uses spare clothes, check how often they send items home so you can wash and replace them promptly.
Choose Comfort Items Carefully
A familiar comfort item can help your child settle into a new routine. If the center allows one, pack a small blanket, soft toy, or other item your child already uses. Ask whether it must stay in a cubby or can be used during rest time. Avoid sending a valuable or hard-to-replace favorite.
For infants, follow the center’s sleep and safe-sleep rules. Do not assume a pillow, blanket, or stuffed toy is allowed in a crib. Ask staff what sleep items they provide and what, if anything, you should bring.
Prepare Meals and Daily Supplies
Confirm whether the daycare provides meals and snacks before packing food. If you need to send meals, follow its rules for containers, refrigeration, heating, and foods that may trigger allergies. Pack portions your child can manage, and include a labeled water bottle if the center requests one.
Depending on your child’s age and the daycare’s arrangements, you may also need diapers, wipes, diaper cream, a bib, or a pacifier. Ask staff which supplies they keep on hand and how they want personal items delivered. Keep any medication in its original packaging and follow the center’s written instructions for drop-off.
Label Every Belonging
Write your child’s first and last name on clothing, bags, bottles, lunch containers, and comfort items. Use labels that stay attached through washing, or a permanent marker on a tag or discreet area. Check the label’s instructions before applying it to anything that touches food or goes in a dishwasher.
Before leaving home, check the backpack against your list and make sure containers are closed securely. Keep a short inventory in the bag if you’re sending several items. At pickup, ask staff whether anything ran out, came home, or needs replacing so you can prepare for the next day.
A well-packed bag covers the basics without overwhelming your child or the daycare team. Confirm the center’s policies, label each item, and keep a spare set of clothes ready to replace anything used during the day. If you have questions about what to bring, contact the daycare before your child’s first drop-off.
